Crazy weekend!
This weekend was ridiculous, and made me really appreciate the quiet time I get when I come home. Here’s a summary:
-riding 3.5+ hours with my postdoc, her husband and their 18 month old son to San Diego for Caltech Biology retreat! He was absolutely adorable and apparently I made an impression on him (he kept asking for “Srimo” all weekend long and made his dad come up to my table at breakfast to say hi!!) I also really love my postdoc and her husband, and I’m totally going to miss her next quarter when I rotate in another lab :(
- going swimming for approximately 2 min and hanging out with rowdy 2nd years.Their class is SO DIFFERENT from ours, and though they were fun to hang out with, I was kind of bummed by all the “grad school sucks/you’ll be miserable in 4 months” talk! I mean seriously, if you hate it so much master out! They made a pretty bad impression on me because later that night I dreamt about one of my professors telling me I was a failure
-David Baltimore’s awesome talk on figuring out why the mother’s immune system doesn’t attack the fetus. He does such cool research but it’s a bitch to get into his lab. Oh well, I’ll just see what he does from afar
-Going to the San Diego Wild Animal Reserve!! It was even better than the San Diego zoo and I got to feed larakeets (though they were pretty aggressive!)
-Getting to watch some awesome Law and Order on USA! I heart hotel TV
-Eating Mexican food at San Diego (woo for Horchata!!)
-Seeing DAVID BECKHAM play on Sunday! He was hot stuff from afar and I’m glad the LA Galaxy won, though I’m rooting for the Dynamos next game!
overall I was glad to come home on Sunday night, and though I was looking forward to gchatting with Naeem (for some reason our hotel didn’t have wifi in the rooms) I was totally tired and fell asleep at 10:30!
today was good! I was a little disenchanted about science at the retreat (it just seems like everyone wants to get famous rather than actually help people) but being in lab again made me feel better. I’m so thankful that I work with normal people in lab, not people who spew science 24/7. I also had a good meeting with my PI, which made me feel more optimistic about this lab. Hopefully things go well!
